This project was inteded to be a private resort for a very wealty family that was scattered across the world and wished to have a place to gather. The resort would become the main residence for the patriarch and matriarch of the family. We were given control over the location of the site, and I chose the resort area of Couer d'Alene Lake in Northern Idaho based on its relative rurality yet its proximity to Spokane's International Airport. I wanted the property to be able to be used without the entire family at the complex, at the same time that I wanted the resort to be one structure. To this end, I organized the project into a five apartment-type units and a grand gathering hall with a library, media area, kitchen, dining, and living area. The main influences on the design were the professor's constant request for me to explore the possibilities of the roof of the structure, along with my desire to create private spaces for individuals and large spaces for groups. |
